Empowering Design: The AI Advantage in CAD Software

Artificial Intelligence is going to be everywhere in the next few years and every company is promoting its use. It is the new “it” thing, just like VHS, DVD and the internet in their days. I would be remiss if I did not jump on the bandwagon because the title of this blog was generated by ChatGPT.
CAD software developers are no different and there is some merit to what artificial intelligence and machine learning could bring to the table. Over the last several years, Dassault Systemes has put resources into developing artificial intelligence helpers in some tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform X-apps.

Many of these tools are built-in and almost passive in the end user realizing that it is artificial intelligence. The Selection Helper uses machine learning to help you intelligently make selections of edges, faces, or other geometry. The Mate Helper allows the CAD user to import multiple instances of a component based on other geometry in the assembly. The Sketch Helper identifies areas to place sketch entities by recognizing existing geometry in the part, saving the designer time. Smart Mate allows you to drag and hold a component to automatically mate the component in place with the existing geometry. This suite of tools is known, collectively as the Design Assistant.

A more obvious case of artificial intelligence within the 3D Experience platform is with Generative Design, which is a process that involves using algorithms, often driven by computer software, to explore a vast range of possible solutions to a given problem. It allows designers to input design goals and constraints, and the software generates multiple iterations that meet those criteria. This approach can lead to highly optimized and innovative solutions, as it enables designers to quickly explore and evaluate a multitude of design possibilities that may not be immediately apparent through traditional methods.
