Introduction to ITEROP BPM

Written by S. Blackwell | May 20, 2026 2:30:00 AM

Dassault Systèmes ITEROP is a platform for Business Process Management (BPM). It is comprised of three (3) apps on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform: Business Process Design, Business Process Play, and Business Process Watch. The goal herein is to explore the basics of ITEROP BPM and offer an overview of the associated 3DEXPERIENCE applications.

What is ITEROP BPM?

Before we define ITEROP BPM as a product, it’s important to first understand Business Process Management (BPM). At the core of BPM are three key concepts: process, business process, and business process management.

A process, in simple terms, is just a series of tasks you complete to reach a specific goal or result. Every process has a clear beginning and a clear end.

To make this more concrete, let’s look at a familiar example: baking chocolate chip cookies. Here’s what that process might look like:

1. Purchase ingredients

2. Preheat the oven

3. Prepare the ingredients

4. Combine the dry ingredients

5. Cream the butter and sugar

6. Add the wet ingredients

7. Form the dough

8. Scoop the dough into balls

9. Arrange the dough balls evenly on a baking sheet

10. Bake

11. Let the cookies cool

A business process builds on that basic idea of a process and applies it to how a company works. In a business process, each step is part of the company’s plan to deliver a product or service to its customers.

Instead of being just a single process, it usually includes several smaller processes that all work together to support that delivery. For example, one sub-process might be onboarding new employees.

Business process management (BPM) is a strategy for taking a close look at how work gets done, then simplifying, improving, and often digitizing those processes.

When BPM is applied, it helps make performance easier to see and measure, boosts productivity, increases customer satisfaction, and improves overall efficiency.

Manufacturing engineers, especially those who use lean principles to refine their operations, can get a lot of value from BPM. In particular, ITEROP BPM gives manufacturing engineers practical tools to put these improvements into action.

ITEROP BPM and BPMN 2.0

Dassault Systèmes ITEROP BPM is a suite of software tools that uses a standard called BPMN 2.0. BPMN stands for Business Process Model Notation. It’s a widely used way to visually map out business processes, much like a flowchart.

You can think of BPMN as a common visual language for designing workflows so everyone sees and understands the process the same way. It was introduced around 2004 by the Object Management Group (OMG). The core building blocks of BPMN 2.0 are:

  1. Start event – This is where the process begins.
  2. Sequence flow – This is how you get from one task to another. If you are familiar with SOLIDWORKS PDM and workflow transitions, then this will be very relatable.
  3. Task – This is a step/stage/ activity where something happens. Again, if you have experience with administering SOLIDWORKS PDM, then this is equivalent to states in workflows.
  4. Gateway – A gateway is like a decision point in a flow diagram.
  5. End event – This is where the process ends.

ITEROP Platform Applications

ITEROP platform has three types of applications, and each has their own purpose.

Business Process Designer
This application enables the creation of BPMN diagrams. It also manages things like roles, responsibilities, and permissions. Once the process is complete, then it can be deployed from this tool whereby it is accessible through Business Process Player. Think of this as the application backend.

Business Process Player
The purpose of this software tool is primarily for executing processes and to track all activity throughout each stage of the processes. Think of this as the application frontend.

Business Process Watch
This software was originally called Business Process Analyst and for good reason. The Business Process Watch application allows an operations analyst to evaluate the data captured during the processes and offer solutions for improvements. For example, specific key performance indicators (KPIs) can be established that identify possible delays and disruptions in the processes. In other words, look for wasteful operations that add cost and possibly impact overall customer satisfaction.

Closing Thoughts
