With the proper guidance, students will feel more comfortable pursuing science, tech, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
It’s no secret that STEM dominates today’s top careers. Data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 10.8% increase in STEM occupations from 2021 - 2031. On the other hand, Non-STEM occupations are only projected to increase by 4.9%. How can parents or educators encourage their students toward a growth-oriented field?
Today’s students have great potential to excel in science, technology, engineering, and math. The issue lies in their confidence and feelings of support to do so; they need the right motivation and guidance to succeed. If a student experiences a lack of access to quality resources combined with a lack of confidence, this will prevent them from reaching their full potential in STEM.
The best time to instill a sense of confidence in students is during childhood through early adolescence. Young minds are more susceptible to influence, and a large portion of their personality and behavior is shaped during these years. Influential adults, such as parents and educators, should send messages conveying strong self-worth.
So, adults, be mindful of projecting your own negative perceptions about yourself onto young people. Messages that confine students to a certain stereotype or negative self-belief can poorly influence their future career choices and damage a student’s self-image for a lifetime.
In terms of building support, educators should also strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. It is important to emphasize that mistakes are part of the learning process and that making mistakes is ok. Creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere makes students feel comfortable taking risks and exploring their interests in STEM without fear of failure or embarrassment.
Educators must cultivate an environment of support by offering access to all necessary resources to ensure students can thrive in STEM classes. Resources can include textbooks, computers, and tools and resources used in the industry.
Offering a chance to explore all of the above can make a huge difference in students’ understanding of STEM concepts. As everyone learns differently, having access to multiple learning resources allows students to create a customized learning plan that best suits them.
Mentorship is a powerful way to give students a push toward STEM fields. Connect students with mentors who are knowledgeable and experienced in STEM to boost their confidence, answer their questions, teach them new perspectives, and encourage them to pursue their interests. Exposing young minds to knowledge leaders at an early age is best.
